We asked Rob a few questions about his music career, here's what he said.
1. Where were you born ?
Rob:
I was born in Northern Rhodesia and raised in Papua New Guinea.
2. When did you become interested in becoming a musician ?
Rob:
My parents were pretty adventurous types , my mum played guitar in a Hawaiian band and I guess that’s where
my love of music and desire to play guitar came from.
3. When did you start playing instruments and what type was it ?
Rob:
First instruments were an acoustic guitar and a tempo electric
guitar. Have always played 6 string electric, though in later years have
played bass and played some keyboards , but definitely electric guitar
is the main instrument
4. When was your first gig and how did it go ?
Rob:
First real gig around 1970 - though had played some songs in bands
from around 68/69 . I think gig went fine - was playing with a bunch of
older muso's - first pay - free cigarettes, free drinks, dinner + $25
dollars!
5. What are some of the highlights of your career as a musician ?
Rob:
Most of my playing time has been a great time - many highlights -
supporting many of Australia's iconic bands from the 80's was a great
buzz , having Billy Idol on the dance floor going hard to our music in
early 80's - being able to still play and entertain people today is a
great highlight. I did play and tour constantly for a 4 year period and got to share a stage with
many iconic Australian bands including Midnight Oil, INXS, LRB , Mondo Rock and Misex
amongst the many.
6. What type of music has influenced you, and why ?
Rob:
Would have to say growing up with parents who loved music , then
playing and living in the greatest pub music times in Australia has
given me a very broad taste and appreciation for all types of music
genre's . I have played pop/ cabaret , funk, Reggae , Blues, Rock n Roll
and heavy Rock .
7. So why country music ?
Rob:
Country was the last frontier for me - the more I listen to it, the
more I like it . A different style of playing altogether . a great and
ongoing challenge to achieve a reasonable standard of playing
8. Who are a few of your favorite country artists ?
Rob:
Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn, Eric Church, Billy Currington , George
Strait - so many great artists , very difficult to pick favourites.
9. What do you enjoy about playing with Kick Arse Country ?
Rob:
Playing with a bunch of mates, having our music appreciated and
danced to.
10. What's your vision for the future ?
Rob:
The band has great potential and producing our own original material
could definitely be on the cards.
Cheers !
